Indeed.  You can consider and use GPFS/Spectrum Scale as "just another" 
file system type that can be loaded into/onto a Linux system.

But you should consider the pluses and minuses of using other software 
subsystems that may or may not be designed to work better or inter-operate 
with Spectrum Scale specific features and APIs.
